Lassco Three Pigeons, Little Milton
If meandering around a freezing cold field on a brisk May morning isn’t your idea of fun, you can, of course, toddle off to Little Milton (about seven miles south west of Thame) to Lassco and delight in the curated salvage that is contained within its Three Pigeons site. From Italian marble fireplaces to more humble antique door fittings, there is so much to see and inspire. Open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays by appointment only.
Antiques at Wendover
There really is a little bit of everything in this Grade II-listed Tudor House in the heart of Wendover. Furniture, yes, but also lighting and ceramics and kitchenalia and prints and enough nooks and crannies to absorb a couple of easy browsing. And then head over to Whitewaters Deli Cafe for a latte to consider your would-be purchases.
The Old Flight House, Weston-on-the-Green
Mere minutes from Bicester Village sits Weston-on-the-Green and The Old Flight House, which boasts over 6,000 sqft of space and goods from over 70 sellers. And it’s not just antiques; there’s soft furnishings and plants and suchlike too, all mixed in with the vintage finds, so you can get a good grasp of how your new cushion might look on that old Chesterfield at home. Plus, there’s a cafe which is due to open again on 17 May: always a good idea to eat before making financial decisions.
Home Barn Vintage Interiors Store, Marlow
If your desired decor sits in either of the three categories – reclaimed rustic, country home or vintage industrial – then you need to get down to Home Barn in Little Marlow. It is awash with gorgeous antique finds and reclaimed wood furniture that will have your friends cooing at your excellent taste. But be warned: you’ll pop in for some flowerpots for the garden and leave with a new dining table plus accessories.
MK Antiques and Architectural Salvage
Looking for that quirky je nais sais quoi to fill that odd space near the living room window? You might want to make tracks here as on top of the usual salvage yard offering (flooring, bricks, fireplaces), there’s also a furniture showroom filled with French dressers and retro mirrors and trunks – all of which can be transformed with a little TLC.
End of the World Reclaimed Centre, Aston Clinton
If you’re thinking of adding some personality to your garden, this might be a good place to start. Iron gates, Victorian lamp posts, stone lions, Italianate stone balustrades… you can go as grand as you dare. There’s also a great range of doors (interior and exteriors) and Belfast sinks should you be planning on doing some creative planting.
Burgess Reclamation, Oxford
Now, if you want to get a new kitchen on the cheap (and you have an excellent joiner on hand), look here first. Modular kitchen units, standalone units and oak worktops are all on offer, along with slate flooring and Victorian radiators. It’s all there. Plus, they offer free advice if you’re completely blindsided by the choice.
Aston Clinton Household Recycling Centre Reuse Shop
Right, so this is a curveball but if you are serious about upcycling and only consider something a bargain if it’s under £10, you should make a point of popping in here occasionally. Essentially, any item that gets dumped at the various Buckinghamshire tips that is deemed ‘too good’ to go on landfill ends up here. I have friends who have come away with a Victorian globe drinks cabinet from this place, all for the costly sum of £8.
The Furniture Recycling Shop, Bourne End
From G-Plan to Victorian mahogany, there’s often some really interesting pieces here that will work for all budgets. So, it’s worth a trip for upcyclers and upholsterers but also, the team here works hard to source high quality, solid wood vintage furniture in excellent condition (if the thought of opening a can of chalk paint works you up into hives). Lighting, garden furniture and antique knick knacks are also in store.
Bull + Tash, Chesham
If mid-century is your thing then you need to stop by Chesham high street and pop into Bull + Tash’s newly opened showroom. They’ve had an online presence on IG for a while now, enticing South Bucks residents with gorgeous, one-off pieces sourced from the continent. Can’t make it to Chesham? No worries. It’s all online and is a London hipster’s dream.
Henley Decor Fair
New to the block, this fair (27-31 May) on the banks of the Thames only started last year but it has 178 pitches taken by antique traders, salvage specialists, upholsters, interior designers and various food and drink trucks. So it’s unlikely you’ll walk away empty-handed. It’s £10 pp but pensioners and under-15s are free. Plus, there’s a free shuttle bus from Henley station. Open 10am to 11pm.
Marlow Antique & Vintage Fair
It’s back and it’s taking place every first Saturday of every month. Right in the centre of town in Liston Hall (parking is available in Liston Road), there are 30 stalls from independent dealers stocking antiques and curios to add a touch of interest to your interiors.
Gilt and Grain, Abingdon
A fab little place this, occupying The Old Chapel on Faringdon Road. You’ll never be quite sure what you’ll find as they have a revolving weekly stock of antique, vintage and modern furniture – all at really affordable prices. It’s well worth popping in occasionally and signing up to the newsletter. Open Weds to Sunday, 11am to 4pm (Sat 10am to 5pm).
MK Handmade and Vintage, centre:mk
This huge event, with over 130 stalls of crafts, antiques, vintage furnishings and homewares is back on for Sat 5 and Sun 6 June (9am-6pm, 10.30am to 5pm respectively) and promises loads of fun hours browsing, plus all the shopping and eating delights of centre:mk when you fancy a breather.
Antiques on High, Oxford
With branches both in Sidmouth and Bowness-on-Windermere, Antiques on High is turning into a (multi-award-winning, no less) national brand. However, the Oxford store remains the original and best and as it opens seven days a week, there’s plenty of opportunity to get down to Oxford’s high street to peruse the wares of over 40 dealers, ranging from ceramics and prints to er… kimonos.
Sunbury and Sandown Antiques Market, Kempton
OK, so not officially in Bucks – or Oxfordshire – for that matter, but this is the big daddy of antiques fairs this side of London so it would seem churlish to leave it out. It takes place on the second and last Tuesday of every month at Kempton Park Racecourse (along the M3 to Richmond) and there are over 700 stalls both inside and outside, meaning you need to come early (it opens at 6.30am and it’s £10 entry) and pace yourself with a thermos flask and some low GI oatcakes. Parking is free. Bring cash to haggle. And unleash your inner David Dickinson.
