Once upon a time in Buckinghamshire
Buckinghamshire’s very own Waddesdon Manor stars front and centre as the Prince’s palace in Amazon Prime’s big-budget retelling of Cinderella, out this Friday (3 Sept). The manor has previously been used as a double for Buckingham Palace in The Crown as well as Helen Mirren’s The Queen. Dunno about you, but we want to know where we can find our own dashing prince who’ll come neatly with a beautiful, French-renaissance style 1800s castle…
Pub news
Ding dong! The Bell at Aston Clinton has a swanky new ‘do, mixing a heavy dose of of modern flair in with the old rustic charm. Sleek green velvet, cosy corners, curved edges, plus a fresh new menu: creamy mushrooms on a toasted crumpet, rosemary lamb koftas, seared sea bass… there’s no messing around, here. Stretchy waistlines needed.
Elsewhere, in Witney, there’s an entirely new pub opening – The Part and Parcel is the latest in a string of high-achieving boozers by Dodo Pubs, which has so far brought us The Rickety Press, The Bottle of Sauce, and The Up In Arms, to name but a few. We love the names, obviously, but also the cool-but-casual vibes and simple, good grub — so we have high expectations for the P&P. Head on over on 10 Sept for a veritable knees-up at the Grand Opening Party, and celebrate with 25% off all food if you sign up to the pub’s newsletter.
Wild happenings
A cute, critically endangered southern white rhino has been born at Whipsnade Zoo. This is a big deal for the conservation world: the world’s second largest land mammal, southern white rhinos number at less than 10,000 left in the wild. Most importantly for us, though, baby Nandi (meaning ‘sweet one’ in Zulu) has adorably huge feet, and will be available to see soon, once she and her mama have adjusted.
In other four-legged news, Muddy Awards Finalist Hedsor House have introduced ‘Canine Concierge‘ as an option in their wedding packages — meaning your dog can be a crucial, and adorable, part of your big day. If that ain’t sweet enough: for every dog-friendly wedding, Hedsor will be making a donation to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Hey, it’s got our tails wagging.
Science fest
Oxford’s IF festival, the festival of science and ideas, is back, baby! Or, it will be from 9-26 Oct, but they’ve officially just revealed their line-up. Bringing together cutting edge scientific research from across the globe and utilising dance, debate, film and whatever other quirky way they can think of, IF Oxford will offer more than 100 events and activities to get stuck into. We’re particularly keen on learning the wacky science behind everyday cooking, and hearing comedian Rosie Wilby chat about the medical science of heartbreak. See more info here.
