Tara Ruby Lalvani is one busy woman. Residing in South Buckinghamshire with her husband Tej (who you may recognise as a Dragon from BBC’s Dragons Den), two children and new puppy the dental surgeon turned entrepreneur juggles family life whilst running her first independent business venture Beautifect, a chic portable beauty studio.
But how does she fit it all in? We asked Tara about her typical morning as part of our series on morning routines for happy women.
What wakes you up in the morning?
Usually my alarm clock around 7am. If not, it’s the kids!
What’s the very first thing you do on waking?
After switching off my alarm, I’ll usually check my phone and reply to emails. My business is international with contacts in the US and Dubai so they’re firing into my inbox at all times.

Do you bounce out of bed or do you need to be dragged from the bed, still clutching your duvet?
Wouldn’t say dragged but not quite bouncing either. Perhaps a little roll off the bed to wake me up.
What’s the first thing you eat/drink?
I’ll always start the morning with a glass of water and a strong, fresh lemon and ginger tea. Usually I’m too busy for breakfast but I’ll grab a piece of fruit as I’m rushing out the door.
How do you set the mood for the day?
I think the way the morning starts off definitely sets the mood for the day so I like to keep things as calm as possible, I hate rushing around or running late which was one of the main reasons I developed Beautifect. I’m not tied down to one room to do my makeup and I can keep all my day-to-day essentials in one place, so I’m not rummaging around for my ‘good’ eyeliner in a messy makeup draw!
Who else shares your morning space?
Typically I’ll be round the breakfast table with my kids making sure they’ve finished their homework whilst doing my makeup. Multitasking at it’s best!
What’s on the radio/podcast/TV?
Radio: I usually have my own music playing in the morning. I like to listen to relaxing scenery music, like the ocean or sounds of the mountains as it helps me focus. I was once asked on a call if I was in a spa!
Podcast: How I Built This with Guy Raz is always great, or Second Life with Hillary Kerr always has really inspirational stories and insights.
TV: Made In Chelsea is a guilty pleasure, otherwise something new on Netflix.
What skincare/beauty products do you swear by?
I swear by Estée Lauder Advanced Night Serum, it’s a great staple for any skincare routine. I also love YSL Touche Éclat Concealer and my Beautifect Blender for application. For me makeup is all about the lighting which was important in developing Beautifect. It has five light settings for different environments that took two years to perfect.
What’s the first thing you do outside?
During the week I’ll be dropping the kids at school and at the weekend I normally step outside for some fresh air. We’ve just got a new puppy so I’m excited to be able to take her for walks along the riverbanks in Marlow and through Higginson Park.
How do you choose what to wear?
It depends what mood I’m in but I usually stick to neutral colours, nothing too dark or bright. I don’t feel relaxed at home if I’m sitting in my day clothes, I always take of my jewellery, watch and put on loungewear, my wardrobe was well stocked for lockdown!
