Idris Elba spotted in Aylesbury!

@idriselba

Fancy trying your luck at stalking AHEM spotting Idris Elba in the local area? Then you’ll want to hang around Symmetry Park studio in Aston Clinton for the next six months where filming has just started for Hijack – Apple TV’s new thriller about a hijacked plane heading for London – where the Luther star plays the role of negotiator. I’ll be doing my own bit of negotiating to try and get through the studio doors…

Buckingham’s hot new café

Buckingham has seriously upped its cool creds this week with the opening of Black Goo – the fourth outpost in the mini chain of super-cool, hipster cafes in Thame, Tring and Berkhamsted. The cafe, which has moved into the garage on Well St in the Hidden Quarter (I love how the retro petrol pumps are still outside!), will serve breakfast, brunch and lunch with a focus on local produce, freshly-baked cakes from the in-house bakery, as well as afternoon tea and bottomless brunch which must be pre-booked (put pedal to the metal and do it now!).

Jubilee jest

Looking for laughs over the long weekend? Then you’re going to want to book tickets pronto for The Potters Arms Comedy Festival (2-4 June). Combining a top London comedy club with a rural village local in rural Bucks, the event is undoubtedly one of the funniest in our local calendar with the line-up including The Edge from Soho’s The Comedy Store (think a mash-up of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Mock the Week), Simon Brodkin, Marlon Davis, Zoe Lyons and Russell Hicks. See the full line-up here – and I’ll see you there. £25 per show, or £65 for a weekend ticket.

You grow, girl!

Marlow garden designer Rachel Platt has beat hundreds of applicants to compete in the RHS Young Designer of the Year at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park in July (Cheshire’s answer to the Chelsea show).

The show garden titled ‘The Covid Recovery Garden’ features a selection of air purifying and remedial plants which benefit lung health and will be relocated back to our patch to the Brookside Clinic, a spine and brain rehabilitation hospital in Aylesbury. Green-fingers crossed for the win!

Banbury sees The Light

Banbury fun-seekers take note! The Light – a state-of-the-art cinema and activities centre – is opening at Castle Quay Waterfront on 27 May. The three-floor building will include – deep breath – a seven-screen cinema, 10 lanes of luxury bowling, retro arcade, top-quality climbing centre, interactive darts, karaoke room (I’m calling dibs on It’s Raining Men), American pool tables and more with tickets on sale from Fri 20 May. There’ll also be a new diner with canal-side dining pods serving handmade pizzas, burgers, milkshakes et al. as well as beers from local company Little Ox Brew Co.

Have a go at The Big Hangover

Don’t worry – it’s way more fun than it sounds! The Big Hangover is the brand new themed room at High Wycombe Escape Rooms. The challenge? It’s the morning after a wild stag do, you’re in a police cell, you’ve lost the groom, and there’s only an hour until the bride walks down the aisle (sound familiar…?). The game is suitable for 8 years and up with the option between child-friendly and adult mode – plus there’s a secret twist at the start of the game (fingers crossed it’s Bradley Cooper jumping out of a side door!).

And finally…

Facebook / Spotted Witney

…a plaque has popped up on an unassuming bench in Witney to commemorate a Mr Tom Rees for scoffing a whopping 27 jumbo sausages – no mean feat. Is it true? Is it a hoax? Nobody knows – but one thing’s for sure: it’s pretty hilarious.
