Secateurs at the ready! Here are some of our favourite wreath-making workshops. Just add mulled wine and mine pies…
Babylon Flowers, Watlington Town Hall: 6 & 7 Dec
With a helping hand from Babylon Flowers’ Juliet Bennett and floral stylist Edwina Sercombe, you can’t fail to make something gorgeous to adorn your door this Christmas. The two evening sessions (6.30-9.30pm) include wine, nibbles and help from the pros (and if it all goes wrong, you can buy order one of theirs and pass it off as your own (shhh we won’t tell!). £65pp (10% early bird discount until 15 Nov).
Blue Tin Produce Farm Shop, Ipsden: Dec 2 & 8
Join Ali from Blooming Botany in the gorgeous and festive surroundings of Blue Tin to make your own handmade wreath. Expect acres of handpicked foliage, a glass of bubbly, warming fire pit (it’s outdoors but under cover), twinkling festoon lighting and a bar. £80pp. Email email@example.com to book.
Bloomin’ Chic, Oxford: 18 & 25 Nov & 2 Dec & virtual workshops
Stylish East Oxford florists Bloomin’ Chic is relaunching its in-person workshops as well as offering virtual workshops this year. If you’re in an Oxford postcode, and want to book a Zoom session, a pack will be delivered to your door ahead of the class with everything you need – moss and spruce, a ring, wires and ribbons, and a variety of natural and glitzy decorations. The in-person sessions are at The Magdalen Arms pub on the Iffley Road and include a natural moss base to keep foliage fresh, plus a choice of dried fruit, cones and cinnamon and/or sparkly decorations. 7pm-9pm. £55pp.
Foxgloves and Roses, Flint Farm, Letcombe Bassett: 4 & 5 Dec
This workshop at Flint Farm comes with homemade gingerbread muffins (always welcome!) and a choice of seasonal foliage, dried flowers, seed heads, berries and ribbons. All materials are provided, just take your own apron and sharp scissors. If restrictions mean the event has to be cancelled, Foxgloves and Roses will deliver the wreath kits to your door with a Zoom session on how to DIY it at home – the show must go on! It’s a fairly rustic setting so wrap up warm! £50pp (book now as Saturday is already sold out!)
Fabulous Flowers, Kidlington & Abingdon: 25 & 29 Nov & 6 Dec
Book quickly to nab tickets to these festive workshops at the Fab Flowers Studio or at the Crown & Thistle Hotel in Abingdon. If the ever-changing foliage archway over the door at Fabulous Flowers is anything to go by, you’re in for a treat, plus, a hot drink and mince pie are included. There’s also a table centre course on 13 Dec if you’ve already got the wreath-making down-pat. £70pp.
Sarah Harper Floral Design, North Oxfordshire: 1-12 Dec
Visit luxury florist Sarah Harper in her cosy studio (log burner will be blazing!) and she’ll teach you how to make a natural moss-based Christmas wreath from scratch, with the help of mince pies and a glass of fizz or two, of course. Workshops are limited to four people plus Sarah, so grab your slot ASAP. £80pp.
Rhubarb & Roses, Claydon House: 2-15 Dec
This luxury wreath workshop is all about creating a large, elaborate and utterly glam wreath in true Rhubarb & Roses style. Willow & Thyme, Nash & Padbury: 27 Nov – 4 Dec
Also in Nash are the wreath making courses from fab florists, Willow & Thyme. You can choose from the wonderful Chicken Shed Studios or opt for the courses in the florists’ studio in Padbury. They are also running a Christmas garland workshop or you can book your own bespoke event. You’ll use a mossed, straw ring so the wreath is fully compostable come Jan. If you can’t attend, there are wreath kits available online. £60pp.
Hearts Interiors and Flowers, Bishopstone Village Hall: 15-18 Dec
Florist Debbie will guide you through the process of making a decorative wreath using spruce cuttings, an Oasis foam ring, wires, cones, berries, ribbon, orange slices and cinnamon sticks, which you can supplement with bits and bobs from your own garden if you bring them along. Starts 12.30pm for 2.5 hours. £32pp.
Quarrendon Adult Learning Centre, Aylesbury: 4 Dec
This is a real DIY option as you bring all of your own materials, as well as the wreath base, foliage, secateurs, wire cutters etc (although equipment is also available to buy on the day). So it’s perfect if you’ve done a course before and have your own kit plus plentiful garden (or hedgerows). Course runs 10am-1pm and you need to take your own packed lunch. £35pp.
Amersham Field Centre, Amersham: Dec
Keep an eye on the centre’s Facebook page for this year’s wreath making course. You’ll be able to learn how to create a natural willow base wreath with evergreen foliage and natural materials, with environmental educator and Forest School Leader Jenny Lewis. As well as a Christmas wreath, you’ll take home a couple of smaller decorations to scatter about your home as well. Festive refreshments included.
You’re too late! Ones to bookmark for next year…
