The Pizza Boys, Bicester
In 2021 The Pizza Boys took their mobile pizza business and took root in Bletchingdon, near Bicester. And now the lucky locals can enjoy their crispy-crusted Neopolitan style pizzas in the gorgeous Cotswold-stone surrounds of Greenhill Leisure Park. It’s open Weds-Sun and there are sides, pasta, pud and locally-produced spirits alongside wine and beer. We also love the breakfast menu and locally roasted coffee.
Pizza by Sartorelli’s, Witney & Oxford
Opened in April 2020, in partnership with nano-brewery Church Hanbrewery in Witney, Sartorelli’s serves fresh sourdough pizza from a pizza shack just outside the brewery where you can bring your own camping chars and picnic blankets to enjoy a bite and beer al fresco. Fast forward two years and Sartorelli’s has opened a second outpost in Oxford’s Covered Market where you can eat in the tiny restaurant (there’s only 20 seats) alongside the glorious mosaic oven.
Lieviti, Marlow
There’s every in-vogue topping you can shake a stick at here – nduja, crispy pork belly, basil emulsion, pumpkin cream… (well, it is Marlow, sweetie). But the ethos is old school – fine Italian ingredients, prepared from scratch. Pizzas are served alongside Italian craft beers, wines and traditional cocktails – simple but effective, and it’s already got an envious local rep after less than a year in the job. Check out the stylish Insta too.
White Rabbit, Oxford
This indie pub just off a little lane behind the Playhouse is anabsolute cracker – it does pizzas and beer and that’s pretty much it (bar a very sharing boards and some cocktails…). There’s every connotation of your classic pizza topping on offer, from Parma ham to aubergine and gorgonzola, and the gluten-free pizzas are much-lauded, but our fave option is The Mad Hatter – tell them your likes and dislikes and the chef will create something bespoke.
La Salute, Aylesbury
Chef Lomma Pino is the key here to La Salute’s winning pizzas with crispy bases, just the right amount of cheese and Italian-sourced ingredients. The place feels very much like a neighbourhood Napoli eatery with Italian themed frescos, chunky wooden chairs and tiled floor. There’s all the usual pizza options plus one with burrata and another with (purists look away now) chicken and sweetcorn. Each to their own!
Holly Bush, Oxford
Osney Island is one of those English peculiarities. You won’t necessarily feel like you’re on an island but there is water on all sides and that does lend a cut-off community eccentricity to this enclave of west Oxford. The Holly Bush is one of two pubs and popular for its (dog-friendly) beer garden and cracking pizzas. Other menu items – nachos, flatbreads ad grazing boards are no doubt there to appease the students (save your finery for another night out), but stick to the pizzas and you can’t go wrong.
The White Hart, Fyfield
Better known for its classy dining and modern British cooking, The White Hart installed a pizza oven in 2020 and hasn’t looked back. Who better to cook the finest pizza than a fine dining eatery? The outdoor eating area is set to reopen any day now for sourdough pizza fresh from the wood-fired oven. Flour comes from the local mill and the pizza herbs from the wooden planters surrounding the tables. Fresh!
Made in Sud, Milton Keynes
Slinging some of the best pizzas you’ll get outside of Naples — puffy, charred crust, rich sauce, excellent cheese — this cheerful street food van based in Intu Milton Keynes is another bonkers hidden gem. Pizza started out as a poverty food, which is why Made in Sud keeps its authentic Neapolitan pizza amazingly affordable. And with a Margherita pizza costing just £4.90, it’s cheaper than most Pret lunches! Now that’s a dangerous thought…
Pizza Soleluna, Oxfordshire
Deep in the sticks? This mobile pizza van visits Wantage, Goring, Benson, Harwell, Woodcote, Headington, Abingdon and Didcot, bringing artisan pizza to the country mice. You can order on the app, then collect in your time slot. No waiting, no dressing up, just you, your joggers and a freshly cooked wood-fired pizza. Win.
Wildwood, Gerrard’s Cross
This chain has got the format nailed – stone-baked pizza alongside all the usual high street faves (burger/pasta/grill) and a style that’s kid-friendly by day and sassy by night. With branches in Wantage and Bicester alongside this one, it’s looking like your weeknight can’t-be-arsed-to-cook pitstop.
Not forgetting…
Other notable pizza joints include Oxford’s old school Mamma Mia, which has branches in Jericho and Summertown, the phenomenon that is Pizza Pilgrims, which has it’s only outlet outside London in Oxford’s Westgate, then there’s the pizza place with the happiest kids – Stonor Park’s The Rumble Hut – a pizza van inside an adventure playground.
