The Bear Den, Woodstock
Slice of culture with your coffee? Tucked away above Muddy Award-winning gallery Darl-e and the Bear – a bijou, eclectic space set across two charming Georgian buildings – this new café and art lounge features works from local artists as well as serving artisan coffee, Japanese Shibui tea and cakes.
Sycamore on the hill, Amersham
This independent café (sister site to the slick Pantry in Hazlemere) is a prime location to pose with your pastry (I’ll have a slice of this cherry, pistachio Bakewell, please) with its dusky pink exterior and exposed brick walls and hanging plants inside.
Norsk, Haddenham
Sitting plum in the centre of Haddenham village, this chic, buzzy Scandi café (a previous Muddy Award winner) is your go-to for excellent coffee and food – think open-faced sandwiches and to-die-for pastries – in its stylish Nordic-inspired interior and sun-trap courtyard.
The Barn at Turville Heath, Chilterns
You’ll have to walk or cycle to reach this rustic cafe that’s famous for its venison, lamb and pheasant burgers (cooked on a Vespa!) as well cracking cuppas, coffees, hot chocolates and gorgeous bucolic views.
Black Goo, Thame
Inspired by cafés and bars in the Big Smoke, along with those visited by owners Sacha and Chris on their travels around Europe and Australia, interiors at this laid-back space are Instagram catnip with eclectic furnishings, industrial elements, neon signage and greenery galore with a chilled playlist on repeat in the background. Be sure to try the Dirty Afternoon Tea complete with G&Ts, fizz and vintage teacups.
Barefoot, Oxford
Cup of Ambition to go please! Barefoot serves some of the prettiest (and tastiest) cakes and pastries in the whole of Bucks & Oxon out of its two colourful locations in North Parade and Jericho (set to reopen this month after renovations).
Vaults & Garden Café, Oxford
How about this for a view with your coffee? Located on cobbled streets overlooking the Radcliffe Camera, in the 700 year old University Church, you can’t find more of a quintessentially Oxfordian location for your coffee and brunch (all sourced from local and sustainable suppliers, natch).
Quince & Clover, Great Tew
Set in an old village shop in the picturesque village of Great Tew, this chic Cotswolds artisan bakery and café serves seasonal menus for breakfast, brunch and lunch as well as pastries (but get there quick), homemade cakes, homemade ice cream, savoury tarts, cookies and Cotswold Crunch loaves.
Cafe Wolsey, Bicester
Located in luxury designer outlet Bicester Village, the little sister outpost of the gorgeous elegant Wolseley on Piccadilly follows suit with its interior mash up of British heritage and European grandeur – think stunning marble, monochrome and individually sourced silver-plated coffee pots.
Coopers, Marlow
Hidden on an industrial estate, a five minute drive from central Marlow, this cool cafe could easily be mistaken for an East London joint with its industrial chic interiors, long communal tables, retro furnishings, and artfully rough edges – not to mention brilliant coffee roasted on site.
